"In November of 1950 Pope Pius XII proclaimed as dogma the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Now this image and idea had been prominent in the Church for almost a thousand years. There has been a feast day of the Assumption of the Virgin, which is held on August 15 of each year. This image of the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin into heaven is a major image in medieval Christian art, so the image has been around for a long time. What's new is that it has been dogmatized."
