"Early Life Sam Heughan was born in New Galloway, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland on April 30, 1980. His parents were avid fans of the Lord of the Rings that he was named after Samwise Gamgee and his brother was named Cirdan after one of the elves who went to Middle Earth. He recalls that his childhood was rather “lonely,” as their place was unknown and he only had a few friends during his elementary and high school days – which led him to develop his acting skills, as he spent most of his time alone thus he used a lot of his imagination. Sam then attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and studied acting from 2000 to 2003."
