"Longacre Square was the original name of Times Square in New York City before it was renamed in honor of The New York Times. The name Longacre Square dated back to the 1870s, when the uptown carriage hub was named after Long Acre Square in London, where carriages similarly congregated. It was renamed Times Square on April 8, 1904, by proclamation of Mayor George B. McClellan, Jr. at the urging of Adolph Ochs, owner and publisher of the New York Times. Today, approximately 330,000 people pass through Times Square every day."
