"Pledge of Allegiance The words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. It didn’t change us or our government. Statistically we are less religious now than before 1954. Prior to 1942 Americans held their hand in the air (like Nazis) to salute the flag. It changed to hand over heart so we wouldn’t look like the Nazis we were fighting. Americans are good people and saying the word God doesn’t make us better and saluting like a Nazi didn't make us bad."
