Yesterday evening, I received a call from my daughter, who informed me that her car had broken down, leaving her stranded in a parking lot. The unfortunate incident topped off an already bad day and served as a catalyst for her to release a flood of pent-up emotions. While it was my natural instinct to alleviate her suffering, I realized that these difficult experiences play a vital role in shaping one's character. Eliminating hardships from one's life may impede their growth and progress. Therefore, I offered my daughter the following words of encouragement: "This is just a bump in the road, not your final destination." "Allow yourself to cry, but avoid succumbing to prolonged sadness." "Concentrate on the countless positive events in your life and don't let the few negatives overshadow them." "Remember, winter never lasts indefinitely, and spring always arrives." "Similar to snow, problems eventually dissolve over time." And lastly, remember the words Elisabeth Kübler-Ross stated so eloquently, "The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat. They’ve known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen."
