Isn’t it the dream for most of us to want to place our star in the sky by doing something big for the whole world to see? It can even be a bit frightening to think of leaving this life without etching our name somewhere. I find it fascinating that on bridges, subways, trees, walls and many other random places people have written with their initials, “I was here.” Nobody wants to be forgotten. I think in the quest to become great, we forget that every day we have the chance to leave our mark upon the world by placing not just one star, but many as we leave behind a piece of ourselves in the heart of another. As school is about to begin, my son has been nervous to go back. He’s been worried mainly about who he will sit next to at lunch. As he has expressed his concerns the last few weeks, I started to realize that for him the most monumental thing someone could do in their life is to be a genuine friend to him. Most people won’t remember what we said or did, but they will always remember how they felt around us. Leo Buscaglia said, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Vincent Van Gogh once stated, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” While we wait for that one great moment of success, be a star in someone else’s dark sky for that small act might be one of our greatest achievements.

"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together."
