Have you ever shown up for something and upon arrival realized you were not adequately prepared for what you were expected to accomplish? Right after having my fifth baby, I was persuaded by a friend to run a race. I had not run for many months and still had plenty of baby weight on me. I’m not sure why I ever agreed to show up that day, but there I stood with a bunch of runners who used this particular race as a warm up. I was feeling nervous and anxious when a fellow runner approached me. She was adorned in all the right brands and fashion and seemed very confident in her abilities as a runner. She glanced down to the ground and noticed the shoes I was wearing and the holes that were present from many years of use. She proceeded to tell me how inadequate my shoes were and how important it was to have many pairs of shoes for training and racing. I’m sure her statements were true and her intentions were to help, but suddenly all I could focus on were the holes in my shoes. Doubt started to creep in and at one point, I considered walking away from the starting line to sit the race out. However a thought entered my mind, I knew I had come with holes in my shoes and I was alright showing up earlier, why was I allowing the voice of a stranger dictate my outcome now? As I pondered this thought in my mind, a fire started to well up inside me and ignite something within. I resolved to race my best race with my inadequate shoes and part of that best race was to pass that woman with her perfect shoes. It took all I had and a little extra, but I did pass her. It was a moment of great satisfaction! There are always going to be voices to discourage or boo from the stands, but if we listen to those voices we will never begin the race. We all come with holes, but that doesn’t mean we are not qualified to run. Dean Karnazes, an ultramarathon runner, made this comment, “Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.” In the end it doesn’t matter how you finish, but that you finish. That’s all that matters!
