At this holiday season I wanted to express gratitude to all of you from our Quozio family. Quozio was a project that my husband created ten years ago soon after I was diagnosed with Guillain Barre syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the nervous system. My diagnosis left us with many unanswered questions and no cure. We had five children at the time and the youngest was only two. Within days I lost muscle strength, feeling in my hands, feet and legs and all mobility. I was given IVIG treatments to slow the progress of the disease, but the only cure was my own body's immune system. We had no way of knowing if I would ever recover. It was a frightening time for our family. Many friends and family members reached out to support us. We gained great strength through their texts and quotes of encouragement. I had one friend who wrote almost daily with a new quote for the six months that I wrestled with Guillain Barre. At one of my hardest moments, my husband compiled all those texts and quotes and made a poster that sat next to my bed where I could read them repeatedly. Those messages gave me the courage to face many difficult days. It reminded me of an old story written by O. Henry called, "The Last Leaf." In the story a young artist contracts pneumonia. She notices an old ivy creeper and decides that she will die the moment the last leaf falls. An old artist and fellow neighbor spends the whole night painting a realistic looking leaf on the wall and saves the young girl's life by giving her more days to heal. Like the old artist, the quote board my husband created allowed me the hope to keep fighting through the pain I was encountering. Realizing how those messages affected the progress of my healing, he went to work to build Quozio, so that others could create quote boards for themselves or to share them with others. It’s interesting how the painful parts of life can become the catalyst for greater happiness. One lesson I learned from this experience is something Helen Keller once wrote, “The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse.” However you use Quozio, we are grateful you have found a place you can record and create your own quotes and thoughts. Thank you for being part of our journey as we continue to grow.
