Every year around the Christmas season, I begin to think about Steve Jobs, because everything on my children’s wish list is from the Apple store. This year I decided to read his biography and learn more about his climb to success. As I read about his weaknesses and strengths, I began to realize that in order to create a multibillion dollar business like he did, he couldn’t have one without the other. Some of his weaknesses were also his strengths. Oftentimes when we see our own weaknesses we try to conform to some arbitrary mold that society has declared “normal.” The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is nonconformity. Steve Jobs did not change himself to fit the world, he changed the world to fit him. Steve Jobs went from working the night shift at Atari because of his hygiene and brashness, to the fresh face of Apple. He did not allow the voices of the norm to crowd out his own internal voice. We each possess attributes and talents that are unique to our own circumstances. Embrace your differences and use them to become everything you were destined to become. At his funeral service over loudspeakers his voice rang out above the crowd, "Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes ... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. ... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things. ... They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do." Today is a new day, believe in yourself and your own abilities to change the world!
