The magic of childhood is being able to believe in fairy tales, unicorns, and happily ever after. It’s a moment in time when the imagination is limitless and where dreams begin and the future is hinged. It’s a place of innocence where little ones wish they could remain and old ones revere. As I grew up, I retained my childhood dreams of creating the perfect “apple pie life” and held my envisioned recipe for success clutched in my hand. For a time, everything was going according to plan. The filing was blended successfully together and made with the finest ingredients. The apples were cut with precision and the crust was fluted with care. I could smell the sweet aromas coming from the oven as it all baked together and I was anticipating the first bite of my labors when life bumped me as I was pulling my perfect pie from the oven. In a moment, all that I had worked for and dreamed about went flipping through the air and crashing to the floor below me. My perfect pie lay smashed in pieces in front of me. Tears streamed down my face as I stared at my crushed pie of broken dreams and for a season a shadow of hopelessness loomed over me. Then it dawned on me, the only thing that had changed was the appearance. All the ingredients remained the same so the pie was still going to be delicious, it just was going to be a little more messy. When life deviates us from our expected course don’t think all is lost just grab a fork and dig in! Each experience only adds more flavor to the pie. Remember, “if your pie crust won’t stick together, make a cobbler instead.”
