In West Orange, New Jersey on December 10, 1941 a massive explosion ignited the night sky. Ten buildings in the Thomas Edison plant were consumed in flames and many fire departments from the surrounding areas had to come to assist. However, the fire raged and the flames roared out of control making it impossible to extinguish the inferno very easily. In 1961, Reader’s Digest published an article by Edison’s son Charles that explained the reaction of his father as he looked upon the blaze. According to him, Edison calmly walked over to where he was standing, and as he watched the flames consume his life work, he said in a childlike voice, “Go get your mother and all her friends. They’ll never see a fire like this again.” When Charles objected, Edison said, “It’s alright. We’ve just got rid of a lot of rubbish.” Edison is quoted to say, “Nothing is permanent but change.” As an inventor, I suppose this had to become his motto. In moments like this, Edison could have responded in a variety of different ways; anger, depression, and fear. He could have quit and stopped trying, but his true emotional character showed through as he smiled and told reporters, “Although I am over 67 years old, I’ll start all over again tomorrow.” Change can create fear, anxiety and reservation as we are pushed from a place of comfort to an unknown world. I have learned throughout my life that it’s because of change that I was able to become more of my refined self. Many cherished opportunities would have been missed had I not embraced the unexpected. Like Edison learned, change is inevitable, but it is entirely dependent on us whether or not we will accept the opportunity that has presented itself and build something greater than what existed before.

"If we did all the things we were capable of, we would literally astound ourselves."
