Jessica It’s easy to identify the talents in others and underestimate our own abilities. We can spend a lifetime living far below our true potential. Fear of failure can keep us from discovering our real identity.
Every summer, my extended family participates in a five kilometer “fun run”. During one of these races, my son, who was four at the time, decided to join the competition. We were nearing the final stages of the race when I could see fatigue overcoming him.
He looked up at me and asked, “Are you going to quit?” I looked at him and said, “No, but you can.” Without hesitation he looked at me and said, “If you won’t quit, I won’t!”
In spite of exhaustion and pain, he kept running. He discovered something new about himself as he crossed the finish line. A fire of confidence ignited within his eyes as he was handed a first place ribbon for his age group. Never mind that he was the only one in his age group, that day he learned that he was capable of finishing the race!
Each of us has capacity that is only discovered when we push beyond our self-imposed limits. Just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, we have strength that even we are not aware of. We learn that clicking our heels together isn’t enough. We must follow our own yellow brick road, encountering lions, tin men, scarecrows and witches. As we do, we find the key to unlock what is hidden within us.
"You've always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself."
