We live in a time when the announcement of a child is an exciting time. Social media platforms allow expectant parents to showcase elaborate gender reveals and huge parties announcing a new life. Unfortunately, there was no such fanfare surrounding one of the most significant births that would arise out of the nineteenth century and would leave an indelible impression upon the world.
Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross. She was brought up learning Bible stories and being tutored on how to pray by the voice of her illiterate parents. These teachings built an enduring strength of faith that gave her the courage to conquer the brutalities and unquenchable heartaches she would have to face as a slave. She learned to rely heavily upon the voice of God at a very tender age and through the course of her life this would prove essential to the liberation of herself and three hundred other enslaved people.
As she once stated, “I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other.” This thought provided the inner grit to pursue her unforged path to freedom, but once tasting freedom, she longed to provide it to others. The purpose of her life and the part she would play in God’s plan, even though she didn’t at first feel confident, became very clear, “The Lord told me to do this. I said, ‘Oh Lord, I can’t- don’t ask me-take somebody else.’” But Tubman recalled God spoke to her directly and said, “It’s you I want, Harriet Tubman.”
Harriet Tubman acted on faith and became one of the most successful conductors for the Underground Railroad. Her courage, bravery, wit and confidence lead to seventy successful crossings without losing one soul.
Harriet Tubman wore out her life in the service of others. She is an example of unselfish love and a standard for humanity to follow. Even though she is gone, her legacy still remains and continues to inspire the world by the words she taught, “If you are tired, keep going; if you are scared, keep going; if you are hungry, keep going; if you want freedom, keep going.”
Let us all remember whatever circumstance we may find ourselves in, “keep going,” and “ always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."
