Jessica Helen Keller lived encapsulated by darkness and silence after a severe illness. It also left her ideas, talents, curiosity, and ambition locked within herself and hidden to the outside world for a season. Frustration consumed her as her ability to communicate her emotions, needs and wants were limited to a few crude symbols and gestures. Many times her discontent led to tantrums and malicious acts towards those around her.
It wasn’t until Anne Sullivan entered her life that Helen’s simple prayer, “Light! Give me light!,” was answered. Anne was patient, consistent, but most of all extended genuine love. Many had tried to unlock the dark world that Helen had been trapped in, but it took the gentle hand of Anne Sullivan to twist the key.
Out in the garden standing by the spout of a well, Anne placed Helen’s hands under the rushing water. Then she began to spell in her hands water. As Helen Keller would later write, “I stood still, my whole attention fixed on her fingers. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten - a thrill of returning thought; and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that w-a-t-e-r meant the wonderful cool something flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy set it free!”
We will not all resonate with every individual we may encounter, but there are many who will cross our path that can ignite within us “something forgotten” or we may be the one to ignite it within someone else. A simple act of kindness accompanied by sincere love can reawaken the hope within another. Never underestimate how far the ripple effect of our actions towards another may flow, it may be the opening for the light they seek.
"You may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world."
