Marie Curie stated, “We must believe that we are gifted for something.” Each of us has a purpose. Sometimes it just takes some experimenting to find the value within. Two dedicated and determined scientists, Marie and Pierre Curie, took the mineral uraninite, also known as pitchblende, and through a series of experiments, they would discover something that would change the world. To most of us, pitchblende is just a pile of brown rocks, but in reality it was a radioactive, uranium-rich mineral. The Curies felt that these newly-discovered radioactive materials had some remarkable capabilities. Unfortunately, pitchblende was difficult to obtain, and they needed a large amount of it to satisfy their curiosity to bring their theories of polonium and radium forward. For two poor scientists on the verge of a breakthrough, this was a stumbling block for sure. However, as luck would have it, a company from Austria offered them the residue of a recent pitchblende refinement. It was not what they originally had hoped for, but the price was unbeatable - they only had to pay for the shipping. Stored in a large tied-up sackcloth, a treasure of brown ore mixed with debris was delivered to the Curies. For some, this would be discouraging. But for the Curies it fueled the ember of scientific passion and turned it into a raging inferno. For four years in a dilapidated shed enduring unquenchable heat and freezing winters, the Curies labored with great excitement and exhilaration to unlock a discovery that wanted to stay hidden. It seems that the many obstacles and trials they had endured in the past provided them with the inner strength to persevere under the most extreme conditions. As the Curies delicately tested and stirred the pitchblende residue under intense temperatures to discover radioactivity, they were also discovering themselves. Even though the Curies never embraced fame or prestige, their persistence to unlock the mysteries of science and push themselves beyond their own limitations and fears, enlightened the world and benefited humanity, especially in medicine through the development of x-ray technology and the treatment of cancer using radiation therapy. The Curies were “gifted for something” and so was pitchblende, but no one even suspected the impact these elements would have on the world when they started, not even the Curies themselves. All of us have something waiting patiently to be discovered. It just just takes “perseverance and above all confidence” to achieve it. Dream big, reach for the stars and leave your own mark upon the world. Just like the Curies.

"Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost must be attained."

- Madame Marie Curie
