Jessica I grew up listening to music that my parents had from the 1960’s. I remember hearing a song by The 5th Dimension, “Up, Up and Away.” The song begins with an invitation, “Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon? We could float among the stars together, you and I... For we can fly, we can fly up, up and away.”
As I thought about that invitation, my imagination would soar and I would daydream of riding above the clouds in a hot air balloon. Then, I would begin to think about all the dangerous things that could happen while in a basket floating above the earth. Due to my fear of heights, I realized I would likely never have the courage to fly up, up and away.
Sadly, I sometimes let risk and uncertainty rule my life. Fortunately, there are others who don’t let worry keep them from ascending off the ground. Sophia Blanchard is a great example of pushing past fear. While timid on the ground, she was a bold entertainer in the sky. She became the first woman balloonist while assisting her French aeronaut husband, Jean-Pierre Blanchard. Even after his death, she continued ballooning and entertaining many elite leaders, including Napoleon Bonaparte and King Louis XVIII. She even received the title, “Official Aeronaut of the Restoration.”
However, her success and fame did not come easily. There were occasions where she lost consciousness due to the extreme elevation and oxygen changes, battled freezing temperatures, and nearly drowned during a miscalculated landing in a marsh.
How did a woman who throughout her life was afraid to ride in a carriage become one of the great promoters of human flight? She took the invitation to ride in a beautiful balloon. To really see what we are capable of accomplishing we must fly in our own hot air balloons. On the ground, obstacles can look massive. However, as we take the steps to ascend, the views above show a clear path to overcome those obstacles. Even though the heights may be frightening at times, it’s better to soar the skies nervously than to never experience the joys of really living while sitting on the ground.
