Jessica As my husband and I drove through the countryside of Belgium on our way to the Belgian city of Bruge, we ended up on a small farm road near Damme. As we crossed over a canal, we were greeted with a breathtaking view of thick beautiful green trees lining the road on either side for miles. I don’t know how we found such a treasure, but we were grateful for the unexpected road we were traveling.
Every bend and straight way was planted with enormously large trees. They had been planted in the same time frame with uniform precision; the same distance apart, and nourished and pruned with the exact amount of care.
Obviously this project had been constructed many years in advance by someone or a group of people who could envision a final outcome without possibly seeing it for themselves. As I reflected on the majesty of the towering trees, I wondered what I was doing to plant "trees" I would never get the shade from.
No one is exempt from laying seeds for future generations to sow. We all drop seeds along the roadside. The question is, are they the kinds of seeds that the generations will want to pull over and enjoy or quickly drive by?
"A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit."
